It sold at auction for seven figures.
It’s been a historic year for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani. Last month, he became the first player in MLB history to notch 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in one season. That history-making ball just sold at auction and added to the growing list of records attributable to the Japanese baseball phenom.
On Oct. 22, the historic 50/50 ball sold at Goldin Auctions for a whopping total of $4,392,000, making it the most-valuable baseball ever sold and officially dethroning Mark McGwire’s 70th home run ball from 1998 that sold for $3.05 million. The winning bid was $3.6 million and the lucky bidder will have to fork over an additional 22-percent buyer’s premium. Some previous estimates placed the ball’s value at approximately $500,000, but given Ohtani’s meteoric rise to fame and first-of-its-kind record, it shouldn’t be surprising to see this artifact of sports history fetch such a pretty penny.
“The accomplishment not only stands as a testament to Ohtani’s dominance on the domestic stage but also his unparalleled celebrity on the international stage,” Goldin said of the record-setting ball, calling it “a one-of-a-kind specimen” and “a crowning piece for any game-used memorabilia collection.” With black scuffs and surface abrasions, the ball’s in-game use is easily noticeable and verifiable.
The Sept. 19 game against the Miami Marlins was a spectacular display of otherworldly talent by Ohtani. He went six-for-six on home runs that night, not only establishing the so-called 50/50 Club but going on to extend his own record later in the game. In the end, the Dodgers made easy work of their opponents, triumphing 20–4.
The Dodgers had the most wins of any other MLB team this year and cruised to the World Series. It’s sure to be a bicoastal competition for the ages as Ohtani and his teammates face off against the New York Yankees, led by superstar hitter Aaron Judge.
