Children’s of Alabama says there are currently 20 patients being treated for COVID-19, according to a daily update. Between one and four patients are currently on a ventilator.

Alabama is seeing an unprecedented surge in pediatric COVID-19 cases with about 5 times as many 5-17-year-olds diagnosed with the virus this year compared to last year.

There are currently 48 hospitalized pediatric cases across the state.

For patients of all ages across the state, Alabama has 1,537 staffed ICU beds but 1,601 patients in need of the spaces for a deficit of 64. The shortage is causing hospitals to treat severely ill patients in other parts of their facilities, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

ADPH Pediatrician Dr. Karen Landers said the number of children experiencing illness and hospitalizations has her “very concerned.”

“COVID-19 can be a very serious illness in children with at least 6% of children experiencing long-term consequences of this disease,” Landers said.

“At least 113 children in our state have suffered from Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome of Childhood (MIS-C), a severe illness that occurs after COVID disease and affects several organs, including the brain, heart, lungs, and kidneys, among other body systems.
