Raleigh, N.C. — N.C. State University is requiring masks in indoor spaces on campus until further notice, starting on Monday, Aug. 2.

The new guidance is part of the updated safety measures put forth by the school, which sent an email to the campus community on Friday.

The requirement is mandatory for those in the buildings regardless of their vaccination status. Masks are required for students, faculty, staff and visitors with a few exceptions:

• The person is alone in a private, enclosed residence hall room, apartment or office with the door closed.
• The person is in an enclosed indoor space when only household members are present.
• The person is actively eating or drinking.

Masks are not required to wear outdoors for vaccinated people, but they are encouraged to do so. Face coverings are also required on the Wolfline, the school’s bus system.

NCSU says students aren’t required to be vaccinated, but vaccination is strongly encouraged. Those living in university housing who haven’t provided the school proof of vaccination will be required to participate in weekly surveillance testing on campus.

“The updated requirements outlined above, along with additional existing measures, will remain in place as our university transitions through at least the first few weeks of the fall semester,” part of the email read.

On Thursday, Gov. Roy Cooper strongly encouraged businesses and schools to mask up and ask people to get vaccinated based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
