Local hospitals say most covid patients are unvaccinated – KWCH

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Hospitals across the U.S. are experiencing some breakthroughs in cases, with people who are fully vaccinated coming into the hospital with COVID-19.

However, it is most unvaccinated individuals who are admitted into the hospitals. Although doctors say these cases are not common, most of these cases were immunocompromised patients.

Wesley Medical Center says it has some breakthrough cases for those vaccinated, but most of its current coronavirus patients have not received their shot.

The number of COVID-19 infections is rising across the country. Here in the midwest, doctors say they see a concerning trend.

With the University of Kansas Health System weekly, Dr. Dana Hawkinson said in a weekly update, in Kansas City, they see some breakthrough cases, and six out of their 37 COVID-19 patients were fully vaccinated.

“We know it very concerns in southwest Missouri and Springfield. Up here in the metro area, it’s starting to get concerning as well. With the number of cases certainly increase since a few weeks ago, with the seven-day rolling average, but more concerning is the hospitalizations,” stated Hawkinson.

Doctor Tom Moore with Wesley’s Medical center says that hasn’t been the case stating, “at all the hospitals in town, what we’re seeing is patients who are sick enough to be admitted to the hospital are people who have not been vaccinated.”

What they are seeing are younger patients, with Moore saying, “young parents of kids who went to church camp, summer camp, southwest Missouri, Arkansas, got the virus and came back and gave it to the rest of the family members.”

They encourage everyone to get their covid shot.
